چکیده

Locomotion in segmented animals, such as annelids and myriapods (centipedes millipedes), is generated by a coordinated movement known metameric locomotion, which can be also implemented robots designed to perform specific tasks. We introduce theoretical model, based on an active directional motion of the head segment passive trailing rest body segments, order formalize study locomotion. The model specifically formulated steered Ornstein-Uhlenbeck curvature process, preserving continuity along whole filament, thus supersedes simple Brownian would inapplicable this case. obtain probability density analytically solving Fokker-Planck equation pertinent model. calculate explicitly correlators, mean-square orientational fluctuations, correlation function separation between tail both either via or directly implementing it numerically from Langevin equations. analytical numerical results coincide. Our help understand locomotion animals instruct design robots.

Thermal fluctuations of elastic filaments with spontaneous curvature and torsion.

We study the effects of thermal fluctuations on thin elastic filaments with spontaneous curvature and torsion. We derive analytical expressions for the orientational correlation functions and for the persistence length of helices and find that this length varies nonmonotonically with the strength of thermal fluctuations. In the weak fluctuation regime, the persistence length of a spontaneously ...

Active contour model with gradient directional information: directional snake

Active contours or snakes are an effective edge-based method in segmenting an object of interest. However, the segmented boundary of a moving object in one video frame may lie far from the same moving object in the next frame due to its rapid motion, causing the snake to converge on the wrong edges. To guide the snake toward the appropriate edges, we have added gradient-directional information ...

Directional ordering of fluctuations in a two-dimensional compass model.

In the Mott insulating phase of the transition metal oxides, the effective orbital-orbital interaction is directional both in orbital space and in real space. We discuss a classical realization of directional coupling in two dimensions. Despite extensive degeneracy of the ground state, the model exhibits partial orbital ordering in the form of directional ordering of fluctuations at low tempera...

Intermediate filaments in smooth muscle.

The intermediate filament (IF) network is one of the three cytoskeletal systems in smooth muscle. The type III IF proteins vimentin and desmin are major constituents of the network in smooth muscle cells and tissues. Lack of vimentin or desmin impairs contractile ability of various smooth muscle preparations, implying their important role for smooth muscle force development. The IF framework ha...

Stretching weakly bending filaments with spontaneous curvature in two dimensions.

Some important biomolecules (for instance, bacterial FtsZ and eukaryotic DNA) are known to posses spontaneous (intrinsic) curvature. Using a simple extension of the wormlike chain model, we study the response of a weakly bending filament in two dimensions to a pulling force applied at its ends (a configuration common in classical in-vitro experiments and relevant to several in-vivo cell cases)....
